Abstract
We studied Cd accumulation in chloroplasts and its distribution between stroma and thylakoids. In vivo, Cd was primarily accumulated in thylakoids; in vitro it was distributed between stroma and thylakoids near equally. Simultaneous analysis of essential cations revealed that in the thylakoids the quantity of Cd is sufficient to compete with Cu, Zn, Mn, and too low as compared to the levels of Mg, Ca, Fe, K. Comparison of Cd, Cu, and Fe treatments revealed specific effects of Cd on cation contents in chloroplasts.
