Abstract
The present study aimed at the investigation of subpopulations of mitochondria obtained from etiolated seedlings of maize (Zea mays) and turnip roots (Brassica rapa) in respect of a number of functional characteristics, such as the activity of respiratory complexes, etc. Mitochondria were obtained by differential centrifugation followed by separation in a linear gradient of sucrose density (0.3 - 1.2 M). Visually, 2-3 fractions can be distinguished in the density gradient. We conclude that the mitochondrial fraction 1 has significant differences in the composition and functioning of membrane complexes compared to the fractions 2 and 3 which contain typical mitochondria. Apparently, this fraction represents immature mitochondria, containing complexes of the respiratory chain which are still forming and are not completely functional.
