The Laboratory conducts complex research on forest ecosystems of Baikal Siberia using geobotany and dendrochronology methods together with the study of various aspects of photosynthesis and tree productivity as well as the isotopic composition of annual rings of coniferous wood. The methods made it possible to obtain a dynamic picture of their condition in recent decades, determine tendencies to the development of forest cenoses, assess the tree productivity and the transformation of carbon fluxes in forest ecosystems, which is extremely important for understanding mechanisms of global cycle of biospheric carbon.
The Laboratory also conducts research on agroecosystems in order to develop approaches to scientifically based solutions to environmental problems in agriculture.
In its dendrochronological studies the Laboratory was the first to identify a number of previously unknown dates for the emergence of large grades of major insect pests as well as large and local forest fires for the past five hundred years in certain regions of the Baikal region.
