In the next few years and up to 2025 SIPPB SB RAS will conduct major studies both in the domain of fundamental research of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics of plant cells, investigation of surface ecosystems sustainability and dynamics in changing climatic environment and conservation of Baikal Siberia biodiversity, and in the realm of biotechnology with the view to create on the basis of fundamental knowledge about cells and tissues of highly effective producers of specific substances, development of genetically modified plants with valuable characteristics, creation and selection of new sustainable, highly productive and fast-growing species of agricultural, horticultural, medicinal and arboreal plants, and their cultivation techniques. Studies of cell vital activities basics will be closely related to the issues of study and conservation of Baikal Siberia biodiversity, expansion of seed bank of Pribaikal’ye rare species, cell cultivars and lines, carbon sink and other ecological, botanical and resource-study aspects of biology.
Baikal biotechnological center is intended to be founded for biotechnological studies; the center will comprise genetic engineering, microbiological and plant blocks. To provide analytical basis for the center, the Institute will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.
Within the framework of food security strategy of Russia SIPPB SB RAS intends to create sustainable and highly productive agricultural cultivars on the basis of the studies of the following mechanisms: а) genetic and physiological-biochemical regulation of cell metabolism; b) intracellular integration of genomes into overall genetic system; c) genes transfer into cell organelles.
Scientific prerequisites are being formed to acquire medicines on the basis of research of address transportation of stress proteins and genetic vectors in nano-package; transgenic plants for production of new generation medicines will be acquired.
Biotechnological and genetic engineering techniques will be used to create fast-growing arboreal plants with low lignin content to produce bio-fuel.
Modified plants and fungi will be used to manufacture economically efficient bio-reactors to produce medicines and biologically active substances. The research of biologically active substances of plant and fungi secondary metabolism will be expanded.
The map of potential carbon sink and productivity of Predbaikal’ye coniferous forests is being compiled; the map will contribute to the study of changing gaseous atmospheric stratum.
Major climatic parameters of Baikal Natural Territory over Holocene period will be reconstructed on the basis of dendrochronological data.
Remediation techniques for agricultural soils polluted by fluorine and arsenic compounds and other hazardous agents will be elaborated.
The system of evaluation of natural resources state will be created with the view to assess efficiency of economic activity enhancement; technology of forecast of Baikal Natural Territory surface ecosystems status under various kinds of economic impact will be elaborated to work out environmental protection policy ensuring innovative attractiveness of the region.
